{"id":567,"date":"2013-07-02T13:38:54","date_gmt":"2013-07-02T13:38:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.w-anibal.com\/?p=567"},"modified":"2013-07-02T15:57:38","modified_gmt":"2013-07-02T15:57:38","slug":"portugals-minister-of-finance-w-memoriam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.w-anibal.com\/?p=567","title":{"rendered":"PORTUGAL\u2019S MINISTER OF FINANCE: W MEMORIAM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The work of late italian economic historian <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carlo_M._Cipolla\">Carlo Cipolla<\/a> comes to my mind in neighbouring <a href=\"http:\/\/en.aixenprovencetourism.com\/\">Provence<\/a> between lovely ros\u00e9 wine and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cezanne-en-provence.com\/page\/en\/25.xhtml\">C\u00e9zanne\u2019s<\/a> <em>Aixquise<\/em> footprints. Amongst other relevant publications, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portugal.gov.pt\/en.aspx\">Portuguese Government<\/a> should adopt as mandatory reading reference \u201c<b>The Fundamental Laws of Human Stupidity<\/b>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.w-anibal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_4957-e1372772173374.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-568\" alt=\"IMG_4957\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.w-anibal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_4957-e1372772173374.jpg\" width=\"630\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a>Following a light but consistent style, Cipolla draws a Cartesian coordinate system in two dimensions where he relates human\/social\/economical interactions in terms of value added by each party. The four quadrants are used to label social groups in terms of benefits and losses: <b>Intelligent people<\/b> (top right), who contribute to society and who leverage their contributions into reciprocal benefits. <b>Naive people<\/b> (top left), who contribute to society but are taken advantage of by it (and especially by the &#8220;bandit&#8221; sector of it); as explained by Wikipedia, however, extreme altruists and pacifists may willingly and consciously accept a place in this category for moral or ethical reasons.<!--more-->\u00a0<b>Bandits<\/b> (bottom right), who pursue their own self-interest even when doing so poses a net detriment to societal welfare. <b>Stupid people<\/b> (bottom left), whose efforts are counterproductive to both their and others&#8217; interests.<\/p>\n<p>Using the cleverly funny way to explain uneasy trues, Cipolla believes that every social group to be formed \u2013 and even all thoughtful sub-groups \u2013 includes a fixed percentage of <b>stupid people<\/b>.
